Powering Hope: NTN’s “N³ N-CUBE” Initiative Safeguards People and Pets in Disasters

In a bold step toward building safer, more resilient communities, NTN Corporation has launched an innovative disaster-preparedness initiative centered around its Transportable Independent Power Supply, the “N³ N-CUBE.” Designed to generate clean, renewable electricity even when conventional power systems fail this technology is now being deployed to protect not just human lives but also the lives of beloved pets during emergencies.
Natural disasters from earthquakes to typhoons often strike without warning, disrupting power supplies and leaving affected populations vulnerable. For pet owners, the crisis can be doubly stressful: evacuation centers may restrict animals, and many evacuees have chosen to remain in unsafe conditions rather than abandon their pets. NTN’s new initiative aims to address these heartbreaking dilemmas by integrating sustainable power solutions with emergency shelter infrastructure.
At the heart of this effort is the N³ N-CUBE, a compact and highly transportable power unit that harnesses renewable energy sources such as solar panels and a proprietary wind turbine, all housed within a robust, containerized system. Under normal conditions, these units serve multiple everyday community roles from providing electricity to eco-toilets at roadside stations to offering power at rest areas. However, in disaster scenarios, the N³ N-CUBE rapidly becomes a lifeline, supplying essential electricity for lighting, communication, and equipment in temporary shelters and emergency facilities.
In partnership with the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University and Michi-no-Eki “Itano”, a roadside station in Tokushima Prefecture designated as a disaster-prevention hub, NTN is customizing N³ N-CUBEs into pet-friendly shelters and veterinary care spaces. These facilities will be equipped with electrical systems powered entirely by the N³ N-CUBE’s renewable energy capacity, enabling them to serve as safe havens for animals and their owners when disaster strikes.
“This initiative embodies NTN’s commitment to protecting lives in the broadest sense,” said a company representative. “Pets are part of the family, and ensuring their safety strengthens the fabric of our communities during times of crisis.”

Once these specialized shelters are complete, NTN and its partners will conduct extensive demonstration tests under simulated disaster conditions at Michi-no-Eki “Itano,” following Japan’s Ministry of the Environment’s Disaster Preparedness Guidelines for Humans and Pets. These drills will help fine-tune operations and demonstrate how quickly the N³ N-CUBE can be deployed to support real-world disaster responses.
Beyond powering shelters, the versatility of the N³ N-CUBE promises broader applications: portable emergency power sources for rural communities, mobile medical facilities, and public safety stations all fueled by sustainable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing overall resilience.
As climate-related disasters become more frequent worldwide, NTN’s initiative serves as a reminder that innovative engineering and collaborative science can transform vulnerability into preparedness. Through the N³ N-CUBE project, the company is not only enabling emergency power solutions but also fostering peace of mind for families and pet owners everywhere.
