Surface Integrity Check

Ultra-precise cutting tools with complex geometries and micro dimensions are becoming essential in modern manufacturing—but measuring them remains a challenge. Conventional systems like touch probes can break delicate tools, while lasers often fail to capture non-standard shapes.

To address these challenges, Marposs developed the VTS (Visual Tool Setter) line, a contactless optical measurement system based on a CCD sensor in a proprietary camera. By projecting the tool’s shadow onto the camera, the VTS instantly captures key parameters such as tool length, diameter, TIR, and radius, even while the spindle rotates at full speed.

What’s New – Surface Integrity Check Without Reference

Today, Marposs introduces a major software evolution: an advanced Surface Integrity Check capable of automatically detecting tool wear without the need for a reference image.

Unlike conventional methods that rely on stored images, this solution uses a proprietary algorithm to analyze the live appearance of the cutting edge. It detects signs of wear, micro-chipping, or damage, autonomously and with high reliability, even on tools never seen before by the system.

New LED Illumination System

This breakthrough is enabled by a newly developed 6-LED front light ring, engineered to provide optimal and uniform illumination of the cutting edge. The system eliminates shadows and reflections, delivering sharper, high-contrast images for accurate analysis.

Automation & Integration with the CNC

The new automatic inspection cycles allow the VTS to evaluate surface conditions and send wear status directly to the CNC. Based on pre-set thresholds, the machine can automatically decide whether to continue machining, alert the operator, or replace the tool.

Most importantly, the operator can now visually inspect the tool’s cutting edge directly on the machine, thanks to high-quality imaging, eliminating the need to remove the tool and check it under a microscope. This reduces downtime, simplifies workflow, and brings lab-level insight directly into the machining environment.
